Dysport® Aftercare 101: 7 Essential Steps for Longer-Lasting Results

The Critical 48 Hours

The 20-minute Dysport treatment is only the first step in achieving your desired aesthetic results. The period immediately following your injection is critical, as the toxin takes time to fully bind to the nerve receptors. Proper aftercare, particularly during the first 48 hours, is non-negotiable for maximizing the duration of your results and safely preventing the toxin from spreading (diffusing) to unintended muscles. Remember, the final effect of the abobotulinumtoxinA (Dysport) will be visible in 10-14 days.

7 Essential Aftercare Steps (The 48-Hour Protocol)

To protect your investment and ensure the toxin stays precisely where your expert injector placed it, follow these seven essential steps:

1. Do NOT Touch or Massage the Treated Area

  • Rule: Avoid rubbing, massaging, or applying firm pressure to the treated area for at least 4 to 6 hours, with some experts recommending 24 hours.

  • Why: Manipulation can push the toxin beyond the targeted muscle, potentially causing unwanted side effects like eyelid droop (ptosis).

2. Stay Upright for 4 Hours Post-Treatment

  • Rule: Remain in an upright position and avoid lying down, bending over sharply, or lying on your face for at least 4 hours.

  • Why: Similarly, this uses gravity to ensure the Dysport stays localized and does not spread.

3. Avoid Strenuous Exercise and Excessive Heat

  • Rule: Postpone intense exercise, heavy lifting, saunas, hot tubs, or excessive sun exposure for at least 24 hours.

  • Why: Increased blood flow and heat can potentially increase the toxin's metabolism and diffusion, which could reduce the treatment's longevity or spread it to non-target areas.

4. Gently Exercise the Treated Muscles

  • Rule: For the first hour, gently contract the treated muscles (e.g., frown, raise eyebrows, smile wide).

  • Why: This may help the toxin absorb and fully bind to the receptor sites, potentially enhancing the final result.

5. Minimize Alcohol and Non-Essential Blood Thinners

  • Rule: Avoid excessive alcohol consumption for 24 hours. Also, avoid non-essential blood thinners like aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, or Vitamin E for 24 hours post-injection (ideally 1 week prior).

  • Why: Both can increase blood flow and interfere with clotting, which can worsen minor bruising or swelling at the injection sites.

6. Be Gentle When Cleansing and Applying Makeup

  • Rule: Use light pressure when cleansing your face or applying cosmetics for the rest of the day.

  • Why: To prevent any inadvertent pressure or massage that could disturb the localized product.

7. Do Not Schedule Other Facial Treatments

  • Rule: Wait at least 1 to 2 weeks before scheduling any aggressive facial treatments, such as chemical peels, microneedling, microdermabrasion, or dermal filler injections.

  • Why: These treatments involve pressure, manipulation, and increased heat, which must be avoided during the binding phase of the neuromodulator.

Long-Term Maintenance for Longevity

Protecting your investment (Weeks 1 to 16)

After the initial 48-hour window, two factors remain paramount for preserving your Dysport results: sun protection (UV rays accelerate skin aging and toxin breakdown) and a consistent, medical-grade skincare routine (to maintain skin health).

The Importance of the 2-Week Follow-Up

The full effect of Dysport is visible only after 10-14 days. Always attend your 2-week follow-up appointment. This allows your expert injector to assess the final result and perform any necessary minor adjustments (touch-ups) to ensure perfect symmetry and efficacy.

Your commitment to the 7 essential aftercare steps is what separates a good result from a great one. By following this simple protocol, you maximize the safety, effectiveness, and longevity of your Dysport treatment.
